Optimum Nutrition Product Reviews

Nutrition by Andreas Reinhold

Rather than teaching doctors about nutrition, I think we’d be better served by teaching patients that you don’t go to a mechanic for advice on how to design a car, and you don’t go to a car designer to fix your flat tire.

Doctors have always been among the worst sources for information on nutrition and fitness, and the ones who did learn something in school are among the worst. Both fields are evolving rapidly, and a doctor repeating the information he learned 20 years ago will tell you to eat more grains, exercise at a moderate pace, avoid alcohol, etc — all things that newer research have shown to be wrong.

Nutrition and fitness are a form of technology, evolving just as quickly as your computer. Listening to a doctor repeat knowledge he learned in the 1980s is like buying a Commodore 64 when you need to get online.

I fight, so I’m injured a lot, which requires occasional visits to doctors. There is nothing worse than a doctor who tries to follow up a torn tendon with life advice (after the perennial advice of “rest”) that is clearly wrong. His job is to fix me, not coach me on a healthy lifestyle.

If you combine a doctor’s ignorance with most doctors’ learned arrogance, what you get is a recipe for a fountain of wrongness that spews bad knowledge into the society at large. That won’t change with a few courses. But it might if we could just deflate their societal status a little down to what they are: a body version of a car mechanic.

Military leaders along with U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack urged Congress to pass child nutrition legislation by September 30.

The Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act of 2010 would boost the nutritional value of school meals by using more fruits and vegetables and by eliminating junk food, such as the ones found in school vending machines. The Senate version passed in August, and now it’s left to the House of Representatives, which would need to pass its version before the legislation expires September 30. The House is expected to take up the re-authorization before the deadline, since the bill has passed out of committee with bipartisan support.

More than 100 retired generals and admirals signed a letter to Congress describing the child nutrition bill as crucial to reducing childhood obesity and helping national security, by creating a pool of young adults who qualify for military service.

“Obesity is now the leading medical reason why young Americans today are unable to qualify for the armed forces. At least 9 million young adults, or 27 percent of all young Americans ages 17 to 24, are too overweight to enlist,” their letter read.

The group of retired military leaders, called Mission Readiness issued a report earlier this year, describing how more than a quarter of young adults are unable to meet physical requirements to join the military, creating a potential threat to national security.

Ex-military leaders: Young adults 'too fat to fight'

“Turning the tide of obesity in this country will not be an easy task,” the letter stated.  “Certainly, there is no single action that we as a nation can take to remedy this problem. However, it is clear that one immediate step we must take is to improve the quality and nutritional value of food and beverages served in our schools.”

Advocates say that as much as 40 percent of a child’s daily caloric intake occurs at school, so these foods should be nutritious to produce a healthy generation.

“We believe schools are a critical place to address the obesity issue,” said retired Rear Admiral James A Barnett, Jr. of the U.S. Navy in a news conference Tuesday.  “Millions buy food and snacks at schools everyday.”

The group says improving nutrition in the nation’s schools is a critical step to combat obesity among the youth.  Military leaders made a similar push in 1945, when concerns about poor nutrition in potential recruits resulted in the creation of a national school lunch program.

Vilsack said there needs to be a better job of promoting “vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy, whole grains” and “getting sugar, sodium, fat content out of the meals.  There needs to be a consistent message between what’s in the lunch line and vending machines. This is very important bill and we’re close to getting it done.  We need Congress to act.”

YORK WEIGHT BENCH by York Weight Bench

Losing weight is hard enough, but having to dent you finances to do so makes it harder, at least more stressful. When you see celebrities, models, or the people on the Biggest Loser working out you see state of the art equipment and trainers. Some of us don't have the money (or time) to hit the gym or hire personal trainers. Even changing your diet, which is generally eating less, can cost more! So keep these ideas in mind when you are looking for a cheap way to drop pounds and tone up.

1-Walking, Jogging, Running. - Probably the first obvious answer. This I the most basic core exercise you can do and can do anywhere. Outside or inside (mall, Walmart). When preparing for the military I had no stamina. I just started slow and alternated walking and running.

2 - Calisthenics - Basic exercises that have been working forever. Try Push-ups, Sit-ups, Crunches, Dips, Jumping Jacks, Squats, Pull-ups, Lunges. There are many variations for all of these exercises, look them up.

3 - Dance, Dance, Dance - Turn on some music and dance.

4- Swim - If you are near a pool or beach try swimming, or just paddling around in the water by yourself, with friends, or your kids. Some community centers have cheap pools and even classes.

5- Cheap Tools - You can buy cheap jump ropes, resistance bands, weight bands, and sometimes dumbbells anywhere. Also look for Craigslist, where I got a bar and a bunch of weights for 20 bucks. Look for used sporting good places. Don't forget thrift stores, I actually found a new weight bench for 10 bucks. Even if its chipped, dirty, or rusty most benches and weights are still just as useful. Look around your house for anything grip able that has weight.

6- The internet - There are numerous websites with free workouts. In fact look no further than YouTube.

7 - Cable - Depending on you carrier or plan most cable companies have on demand features that usually contain workouts.

8- Used books and videos. - Look at websites like Amazon and EBay. Also look for used books stores in your area or even the thrift store.

9- Just move - recently I have tried to add little changes to how I play with my daughter or how I do my chores to add a little extra work in what I do.

You don't need a lot to at least lose a little. Also don't doubt what you can find from thrifting!

Yankees What Happened To Our Don?

Who needs medical school when all you need to do is cover the Dodgers? It surely isn’t get any easier for the Dodgers as they place right-handed pitcher Vicente Padilla on the 15-day disabled list with a bulging disk in his neck. The team will be recalling right-handed relief pitcher Travis Schlichting from Triple-A Albuquerque.

“It’s a blow,” Torre said. “It’s like that other shoe hitting the floor, you hoped it was going to be better after the last one.”

“He’s had a little bit of left neck pain the last two starts,” head medical trainer Stan Conte said. “After the first couple of innings in his last start it started bothering him again. It kind of bothers him a little bit in the neck, a little bit on the left side in between his shoulder blade.”

Padilla since coming off the disabled list on June 19 with a sore right elbow had been remarkable for the Dodgers before his last two starts having a 1.80 ERA in nine starts with a 4-2 record. He hasn’t fared that well in his last two starts giving up 12 earned runs in 9 1/3 innings pitched - the same amount of runs he gave up in his previous nine starts.

“It didn’t show up in the velocity, but it showed up in his command,” Torre observed.

Dr. Robert Watkins, Jr. performed an MRI on Padilla today and discovered the bulge in one of the disks in the neck.

“It’s not a real big bulge, and it’s not pushing on a nerve,” Conte said. “But it’s a bulge nevertheless and probably the source of where his problem is.”

Padilla most likely will not undergo surgery instead receiving an epidural injection tomorrow to help reduce the inflammation.

  • Yankees 10, Mariners 0: CC Sabathia hasn't lost at Yankee Stadium in his last 15 regular-season decisions -- he did lose Game 1 of the World Series last year -- and he extended that streak with ease Sunday. Rain prevented him from working into the seventh inning, but it didn't stop Robinson Cano from hitting a grand slam and knocking in a career-high six runs. The Yankees now have 10 grand slams this season. That matches a franchise mark from 1987, when Don Mattingly had six himself. The Yankees are now 12-0 without Alex Rodriguez this season. Rodriguez is on the disabled list for almost another two weeks, so if the Yankees can keep that up, they can probably all but wrap up a playoff spot. Don't hold your breath, though.

  • Pirates 2, Mets 1: Johan Santana has now thrown three straight complete games. Unfortunately, he's lost the last two of them. Zach Duke outdueled his Mets counterpart as the Pirates avoided a sweep. Jose Tabata -- an ex-Yankees prospect -- and ex-Met Lastings Milledge homered for the Pirates runs. A Carlos Beltran sacrifice fly accounted for the Mets run.

School: Back to school shopping ripoffs?

Back To School by weaveDesign

The first day of school is an important one for both teachers and students. That first day can also be a little nerve-wracking. When children come to school on the first day, they tend to be a little anxious for a number of reasons. They're meeting new teachers, in new classrooms, reuniting with old friends from last year, and feeling the pressure of making new friends this school year. As a teacher you need to be understanding about these first-day jitters and help students get to know one another. There are so many "ice-breaker" games and first-day activities out there to use at the start of a school year. Here are a few lesson ideas you might want to use in your classroom for the first day back to school.

The Human Scavenger Hunt: To play this game you'll need a set of index cards, one for each student in the classroom. Have the students write down some interesting little factoid about themselves on an index card. Then mix them up and have the students search for the person that matches the index card they receive. You could also write generic facts onto the index cards yourself. The cards could say "has been in a stadium" or "is wearing something pink" or "has a baby brother."

True or False: This is a great way to learn something interesting about one another. Begin the activity by writing three facts about yourself on the board or on an overhead transparency. Make two of the facts true and one fact false. Survey the students to see which fact they believe is the false statement. Go over all of the statements, adding information to the true statements and identifying the false one. Then, students get to write three statements about themselves on a sheet of paper, two that are true and one that is false. Go around the class and go through the same guessing process for each student.

The Teacher Test: Have the students take "the hardest test of the year" as soon as they get settled into class. Orally ask questions about yourself for this test. Some of the questions might be, "Where was I born? How many sisters/brothers do I have? How old am I? What's my favorite color? What's my favorite food? or What kind of car do I drive?" Make the test as long or as short as you want. This is a great activity for introducing yourself to the class. It also makes you appear more human to your class instead being seen as only an authority figure or subject expert.

The Classroom Book: Read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown. This is a great book that tells the important things about different objects (a spoon, the wind, an apple, etc.). It has a repetitive form and your students should use that rhythm to create their own "Important Book." Each student should tell a little about themselves following The Important Book's format. Then you create a class "Important Book" by meshing together every child's final book page which reads "The most important thing about ____ is that he/she ____." Each child should have their own books to take home at the end of the day and you'll also have a classroom book that can be read throughout the year.

BINGO Scavenger Hunt: Make up BINGO cards for all of your students. Each square on the card has a description (similar to the index cards mentioned in the Human Scavenger Hunt activity). Students walk around the room and get the name of a classmate that fits the different descriptions on the BINGO card. The goal is to fill the entire BINGO card with classmates' names. You can set a time limit for the activity if it seems like it's taking too much time. Or you could shorten the activity's length by seeing who can make an "x" first or some other variation (up and down, four corners, etc.).

The Riddle Book: Students will create their own riddle books. They should write four or five statements about themselves, and the last line should read "Who am I?" Once all of the students have their statements down, read everyone's papers and have the class guess which student those statements describe. Let the student say whether the class is right or wrong.

Alphabetical Order: Give students their first assignment. They need to sort themselves in alphabetical order by last name within three minutes. This will get students talking and help them to recognize other classmates' names. For lower grades, have each student wear a name tag to make the activity less complicated.

Class Animals: This is a simple activity that puts a fun spin on dull introductions. Begin by giving the class your name and telling them that if you were an animal you be ____ and give the reason why. For example, you could say "Hi, my name is Ms. Jones, and if I were an animal I'd be a hyena, because I love to laugh." Give the students some time to think about what animal they want to be and why. Let the students give their animal introductions and try to repeat all of the children's names and animals in the order you hear them. This activity can help you to remember student names quickly while showing the class that their teacher isn't perfect (you will inevitably make a mistake).

Paper Bag Show-and-Tell: You should send a letter home to students, introducing yourself and telling them about the new school year before the first day of class. Send all of your students a paper bag along with this letter. Tell the students to fill the bag with four of five items that mean something to them or that describe them in some way. On that first day of school you can all sit around and have show-and-tell time. Each student will open up their bag and show the rest of the class their items, explaining why it is important or how it represents them as a person. Don't forget to bring your own goodie bag so that you can join in on the fun and let your students know a little bit about you.

Class Detectives: Give each student at "clue sheet" and go over all of the incomplete statements with the class. Have everyone find a quiet spot where they can fill in the blanks. Statements like, "My favorite hobby is ___," and "The most fun thing I did this summer was ____," could be used on the clue sheet. Once everyone completes their clue sheet, mix them up and distribute an anonymous paper to each student. It's time for the students to play detective. Have students move around and ask some questions to figure out whose clue sheet they have.

All About Me Posters: Students are to draw and color their name on a large sheet of paper or on a piece of poster board. They should add things about themselves, like birthdays, favorite colors, and any hobbies or interests they have. Display these "All About Me" posters around the classroom. For a different take on this idea, have the students draw self portraits instead of their names. Or instead of making posters, have the students create "All About Me" desk plates.

Dear Me Letters: Have students write a letter to themselves on the first day of school. In this letter, the students should discuss their feelings about starting a new school year, what they liked or disliked about last year, and what they expect out of this school year. Come up with your own requirements for the letter. Collect the letters and put them in labeled envelopes on the first day of school. At the end of the year you can pass these letters back out and let the students read what they wrote at the beginning of the year. This is a great way for you to get to know your students a little better. You'll also get an idea of what they expect from the new school year from day one.

First Day Advice: This may not be something for this school year because it requires some early planning, but you can think ahead for next year if you like this idea. At the end of the school year, have your class write letters to next year's students. In the letters the student's should offer advice on how to be successful and what to expect in your classroom. Read all of the letters to your new class on the very first day of school and let them know that they will one day get to write their own letters for your future students.

Picturing Rules: You should always introduce the rules and classroom expectations on the first day of school. Make the rules fun by getting students to model appropriate behavior instead of simply reading the rules from a pre-made list. You could take a picture of your students acting out your rules and post them on the wall to reinforce their meaning. If you can't take pictures, have your students create drawings to represent the classroom rules. They could use them as their own self-made student handbooks to look back to when they need reminding.

The Circle: Get the students to sit in a circle with everyone facing one another. Introduce yourself and tell the class one fact about yourself. Go around the circle and have the students in the class do the same. Once all of the students are finished with their introductions, go back around the circle and have students try to repeat the information (names and facts) about other students. Those students can say whether the information is right or wrong.

Time Capsules: On the first day of school, have students make their own time capsules. You can use shoeboxes or small cardboard boxes, with students' names decorated with glitter, markers and paint. The students can put pictures of who they want to be, a list of their friends, a copy of their handprints, a story they wrote, and a sample of handwriting in these time capsules. Let the students come up with ideas for what they want to store in their time capsules. Store them in a safe place or hang them from the classroom ceiling. At the end of the year you can bring these capsules back out and let the students see how they've grown over the past school year.

Animal Scramble: Write the name of an animal that makes a familiar noise on a slip of paper. Create five to 10 slips for each animal you decide to use. Good animal choices include a cow, duck, chicken, dog, cat, goat, or snake. Give your students a slip of paper and tell them that they have to keep their animal a secret. After everyone has their animal paper, the students must make the noise of the animal and try to find the other students that are making the same animal noise. Continue with the game until all of the student animals find "their kind" and get into animal groups.

Data Processors: This is a good activity for older students but can be adapted for younger classes as well. Divide the students into groups. Use your own judgment when determining group size. The larger the group, the more difficult and time consuming the activity will be. The idea here is that the students will process data about themselves. You could give prizes to the first group that correctly processes their data. Examples to use for this data processing game include arranging group members by first name (alphabetize), height (get some measuring skills in there), birthdays, shoe size, length of hair, or number of letters in last names. Get creative with the data you choose to use for this activity, and adjust for the different grade levels.

Icebreaker Beach Ball: Why not throw a ball around in class? This can be a lot of fun for students going back to school. Get a large beach ball and use a permanent marker (fine or medium point) to write down a whole bunch of "get to know you" questions. Once you create this icebreaker ball you'll be able to reuse it every year, so the time put out making it will be worthwhile. Have the students stand in a circle and throw the ball around to different students. The person who catches the ball has to answer the question touching his or her right thumb.

Catch Me if You Can: This is a really fun game that gets students to interact with one another on the very first day of class. Pair up two of your students. Make two lines, with partners directly across from one another. Students should take about 30 seconds to look very closely at their partner, taking in as many details as possible. Tell the two lines to face away from one another once the 30 seconds ends, and give one or both lines time to change something about their appearance. The change should be something very subtle. The student might take off a ring or belt, switch a watch to the other wrist, or part their hair on the other side. The goal here is to try and stump your partner on what's different about your appearance. The change made has to be visible but discrete. Give the students 20 to 30 seconds to alter their appearance. Have the students turn back around and give them another 30 seconds to figure out what is different about their partner now.

Buy what you need for the first day of school but don’t buy too much for the rest of the year. Some items, such as pencils and pens, might be useful to stock up on if there is a great sale. But since many stores overstock on items, you may actually be able to find some bargains by scanning for sales after the back to school rush is over.

Did you know

Aston Martin Sports Car in London by gutierrezcars

Ever since my daughter decided to compete in pageants, I have become aware of the fact that many people we know do not approve. I realize that the pageantry world, children’s pageants in particular, carries a certain stigma. However, when comparing competing in pageants to competing in sports, I have to ask, what the difference is.

Childrens pageansts vs softball
No one would ever turn up his or her nose at me if my daughter were interested in softball. Instead, they would ay that participation in softball could teach her sportsmanship and discipline. They would gladly purchase her fundraisers, and wish us luck. Children’s pageants also teach sportsmanship and discipline. After all, only one child can win the crown in each age division. The other girls have to be good sports to deal with the fact that they did not win. As for discipline, the preparation process of pageants, which can include talent lessons, staying in shape, and taking care of one’s body, definitely teaches discipline.

Childrens pageants vs basketball
Basketball teaches important skills like team playing, and defense skills. While pageantry is more of a solo sport, a girl in the pageant system would learn the importance of building a support system of people who she knows she can trust. She would learn how different people on the team can focus on one goal and succeed. Her team players would consist of her stylist, fitness trainer, tailor and others. It teaches her to build a successful team and to learn from others. She also learns to defend herself (or her goal) by being well prepared for competition.

Childrens pageants vs martial arts
Martial Arts teach mental discipline, character development and building self-confidence. Likewise, a pageant participant cannot be successful without these things, most importantly self-confidence. Without believing in yourself, you will surely fail to reach your goal.

Childrens pageants vs track
Track teaches children about staying fit, endurance, and the importance of proper nutrition. Just as a child will find that lack of proper diet and daily track practice will prevent them from improving, pageantry will also teach the same lesson. Contestants do not have to be thin (unbelievably), but they need to fit and do their best to maintain good health.

Childrens pageants vs football
Football teaches girls that no goal is beyond their reach. Girls who participate in football Have to work extra hard to get on the team and do their best at all times to stay on the team. Pageants also set high expectations for girls. Whether her goal is to get the crown, win the most talented contest, or to sell the most ads, pageants gives girls goals they must be fully committed to in order to achieve. On the other hand, there are those who believe that football is not for girls because they should be focusing on being young ladies and not trying to measure up to boys physically.

There's the rub!
That brings us back around to pageants. Its is a catch 22 that while girls are expected to act like ladies, that they are not supposed to compete as ladies. It is my opinion that society let girls and parents choose their own goal and not try to measure up to someone else’s standards. All girls want to be the best at something, be it softball, basketball, martial arts, football, among other sports, or the best girl in the crowd.

For my child, her goal is to out-girl the others, in her own special way. That is just a short-term goal. Ultimately, her goal is to be a millionaire by the time she is 21.

FYI; Oprah Winfrey’s first public exposure was as a beauty pageant winner.

Top Yahoo New Stories

Okay, after a long hard day at work you sit down to relax and turn on the local news. A teaser announces that coming up is a story about a fantastic new breakthrough in treatment for skin problems. It just so happens that your skin has been getting a little rough and scaly and nothing seems to work so instead of channel surfing you sit tight through the commercials and wait for the segment on this medical breakthrough. Amazingly, enough the story actually does air in the next segment. You watch as a reporter you don’t recognize interviews a member of the company that is marketing the new skin care product. It sounds pretty darn good and you think you’ll try it. This must be something if it actually made the news, right?

Think again. It’s not local, it’s not news, and that wasn’t even a reporter. The whole thing was produced by the very same company hyping its “miracle breakthrough.” But your local television station aired it anyway. Think something like that doesn’t happen very often? I reiterate: Think again.

These self-produced segments are known as video news releases or VNR’s. And they are produced and distributed by a whole host companies as well as government entities. According to those television stations who’ve been caught airing this kind of fake news, they usually make it onto the newscast purely as a result of laziness. They simply didn’t take the time to examine whether it was a legitimate news report or not. KPIX in San Francisco aired a VNR produced by Pfizer. “A mistake,” they called it. WSYR in Syracuse aired a VNR produced by Towers Perrin. “A mistake,” they called it.

These may very well be mistakes. But what of stations that have been caught airing a VNR on multiple occasions? How many mistakes do you have to make before you get fired for incompetence or stupidity? Or, perhaps the better question might be, how many times will you try to get away with airing a VNR on purpose before you know you can’t use that “it was a mistake” argument any more?

What’s wrong with airing a VNR? Is it really that horrific? Well, for one thing, I don’t know about you but when I sit down to watch my local news—which is rare, but for a multiplicity of reasons—I do so to catch up on what’s actually happening in my community. Not only do I not watch my local news for coverage of what’s going on in Israel or keeping up with the latest on Natalee Holloway or JonBenet Ramsay or OJ Simpson, but I also don’t watch it in order to watch stealth commercials. I get plenty of those as it is, thank you very much. I understand that many local news bureaus are strapped for cash and can’t actually cover much local news and therefore depend on canned interviews and third-party feeds, but that’s different. If I’m watching a canned report about the state Senate appropriating money for some pork project, I know to turn the channel and come back later.

But what about when I’m watching a news report that shows an Iraqi-American in Kansas City jubilantly thanking Pres. Bush for toppling Baghdad or other stories that can be viewed as a drumbeat for the health, educational or economic policies of Pres. Bush? Why should I view these reports with suspicion? They aren’t trying to sell me on skin cream or computers or ethanol. How can they possibly be anything but authentic?

Because they were produced and distributed by the federal government. At least twenty different federal agencies have produced video news releases which cannot be considered anything other than propaganda pieces for the Bush administration. In essence, these little snippets of fake news are nothing different from the propaganda films produced under the guidance of Hitler or Stalin. Or the US, for that matter. Don’t think that the US was as guilty of hilariously leaden propaganda as the Soviet Union? Get up early and turn on the History Channel around 6:50 AM Eastern time. After the commercial-free documentary on whatever that aired at 6:00 AM, they usually show a side-splitting “educational film” from the fifties or sixties that demonizes everything un-American and presents whatever we were doing back then as a crusade in the name of good. Even the Vietnam War seems like a good idea when you watch these things.

Back to the Bush-produced VNR propaganda. These government propaganda films look for all the world like a locally produced news segment. They feature a “reporter” conducting interviews with government officials that sometimes aren’t even scripted. The worst thing about this propaganda films, however, may be that your local anchors introduce them with the same kind of patter that they would introduce an honest report by a local team on an issue such as the local real estate market, or where to find the cheapest gas in the area. To the average viewer, these Bush-approved VNR segments look like nothing more than another news segment.

They aren’t. They are commercials, whether for skin care products or Pres. Bush. Commercials plain and simple. And they are being sold to you as news. Local news at that. I mean, we might well forgive little Katie Couric for hosting a report on the magic of Harry Potter and trying to disguise it as news, but is it too much to ask that our local newscasts be devoted to real local news?
